TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR THE SEVE TROPHY 2005
- Casey and Levet picked as wild cards -

Paul Casey and Thomas Levet, two of the heroes of Europe’s record breaking 2004 Ryder Cup victory, have been named as the two wild cards to complete the teams for next week’s Seve Trophy at The Wynyard Club.

Englishman Casey was selected by captain Colin Montgomerie as he finalised the Great Britain & Ireland team to defend the Seve Trophy they won two years ago in Valencia while Frenchman Levet, another of the rookies from the 2004 European Ryder Cup Team, was chosen by Continental Europe captain José Maria Olazábal in his quest to level the series.

The two teams competing at The Wynyard Club in the Tees Valley from September 22-25 contain ten Ryder Cup players and another ten players hopeful of making The European Team at The K Club next year.

In addition to the two wild cards, eight players qualified through their current position in the Official World Golf Ranking and The European Tour Order of Merit. The full teams are as follows:

Great Britain & Ireland

Colin Montgomerie (capt) (Scot)
Paul Casey (Eng)
Stephen Dodd (Wal)
Nick Dougherty (Eng)
Bradley Dredge (Wal)
Padraig Harrington (Ire)
David Howell (Eng)
Paul McGinley (Ire)
Graeme McDowell (N.Ire)
Ian Poulter (Eng)

Continental Europe
José Maria Olazábal (capt) (Sp)
Thomas Björn (Den)
Emanuele Canonica (It)
Niclas Fasth (Swe)
Peter Hanson (Swe)
Miguel Angel Jiménez (Sp)
Maarten Lafeber (NL)
Thomas Levet (Fra)
Henrik Stenson (Swe)
Jean-François Remesy (Fra)

The four-day event - widely acknowledged as the breeding ground for Europe’s Ryder Cup stars of tomorrow - will be hosted by golfing legend Seve Ballesteros.
“I think these teams are evenly matched and expect another close encounter,” said Seve. Great Britain & Ireland currently lead Continental Europe 2-1 in the series of Seve Trophy contests after a two-point victory in Valencia in 2003.

The Great Britain & Ireland team is made up of four Englishmen, three Irishmen, two Welshmen and a Scot. Commenting on his team, defending captain and Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie said: “Fresh from leading my European team to victory over the Americans in the All Star Cup, I am looking forward to taking the lead with this talented team as we try to make it three wins in a row over Continental Europe.

“We won a hard-fought victory in Valencia two years ago and I’m determined that we hold on to the trophy we first captured at Druid’s Glen in 2002. I feel fortunate that I can pick someone of Paul Casey’s stature with Ryder Cup experience who will give the Great Britain & Ireland team the opportunity to win the Seve Trophy for the third time in a row.”

The Continental Europe team contains three representatives from Sweden, two from Spain, two from France, and one each from Denmark, Italy and Holland.
José Maria Olazábal commented: “I have no doubt that this Continental Europe team is strong enough to regain the trophy (first won at Sunningdale in 2000) and we will be competing hard to do so over all four days of the event.

“I selected Thomas Levet as my wild card pick because he is playing well and he has played in both previous Ryder Cup and Seve Trophy matches.”

The contest begins with five Fourball matches on Thursday and Friday (22 & 23 September) followed by four Greensomes and Foursome matches on Saturday (24 September) and the Singles matches on Sunday (25 September) on The Wynyard’s 7,063-yard par 71 Wellington Course.

The event is sponsored by One NorthEast , the regional development agency for the North East of England. The agency has worked with The Wynyard Partnership – comprising Tees Valley Regeneration, The Wynyard Club, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and Tees Valley Partnership.

José María Olazábal & Severiano Ballesteros

PRESS RELEASE
11 July 2005

SEVERIANO BALLESTEROS TO HOST SEVE TROPHY EVENT
- José Maria Olazábal to captain Continental Europe team -

GOLFING legend Severiano Ballesteros today announced that he will host the Seve Trophy contest in the Tees Valley later this year, while his long-term Ryder Cup partner José Maria Olazábal takes over the captaincy of the Continental Europe team attempting to win back the trophy from Great Britain & Ireland.

The five-time Major winner confirmed that injury problems would prevent him from leading the Continental Europe team at The Wynyard Club in September (22-25) and contesting another singles match against the Great Britain & Ireland captain, Colin Montgomerie, who leads the series 2-1.

“I am very sad that injuries prevent me from playing in the Seve Trophy this year, said Seve. “I had hoped to square the series of singles matches against Colin, but it was not to be.

“However, I look forward to attending the event in the North East of England, taking part in the opening ceremony and presenting the trophy to the winning team. I can’t think of a better leader of the Continental Europe team than my friend José Maria. I believe he will prove a great captain during what is always an exciting and competitive contest between Europe’s top players.”

Commenting on his captaincy, José Maria Olazábal said: “It is an honour to be named as captain of the Continental Europe team to play in this year’s Seve Trophy event and look forward to leading a strong team against Great Britain & Ireland.

“Being captain will be a new experience for me and if I do, say 40% of the good job that Seve did, then I think that would be good enough for us to win the trophy back,” he added.

José Maria has been a member of the Continental Europe team in each of the previous three contests – in the victorious team at Sunningdale in 2000, as well as the losing teams at Druids Glen in 2002 and Valencia in 2003. His current record in the event stands at: played 14, won 5, halved 3 and lost 6.

The four-day event - widely acknowledged as the breeding ground for Europe’s Ryder Cup stars of tomorrow – will boast the most star-studded line up of golfing talent ever assembled in the North East of England, including many of last year’s triumphant European Ryder Cup team. Qualifying for the event ends on 5 September and each captain has one wild card pick to add to the top four players from both the Official World Rankings and the European Tour Order of Merit.

George O’Grady, Executive Director of the European Tour, said: “We are pleased to see such a strong and experienced matchplay competitor like José Maria take over the captaincy of the Continental Europe team and are grateful to Seve for making what must be a painful decision in the best interests of the other players as well as the event that is rightly named after him.”

Commenting on behalf of the main sponsor of the event, Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of regional development agency One NorthEast, said: “We will be delighted to see Seve in person during the event and look forward to giving José Maria and Colin and their respective teams a very warm welcome to the North East.”

The Wynyard Club Managing Director, Gary Munro said: “We are sorry that Seve is unable to play on our new, improved course, but thrilled that he will host the event and have more opportunity to meet the golf fans in the North East who can’t wait to see such great golfers competing in the Seve Trophy.”

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

October 11 2004
GOLF legend Seve Ballesteros today gave his stamp of approval to the North East as the host of next year’s Seve Trophy.

The five times Major winner has confirmed The Wynyard Golf Club in Tees Valley as the host of the 2005 event, pitting the best of Great Britain and Ireland’s golfers against Continental Europe from September 22 to 25.

Hardwick Hall Hotel, near Sedgefield, County Durham, will be the official accommodation for the players during their stay for the tournament and hosted today’s media launch.

The four-day event - widely acknowledged as the breeding ground for Europe’s Ryder Cup stars of tomorrow – will boast the most star-studded line up of golfing talent the North East has ever seen, including many of this year’s European Ryder Cup stars.

Seve will captain the Continental European side while Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie will lead the Great Britain and Ireland team in defending the trophy they won in Valencia last year.

The former British Open and US Masters champion met with dignitaries at Hardwick Hall today before seizing the chance to play Wynyard’s Wellington Course to gauge its qualities for himself.

Seve said: “I'm looking forward to returning to England for the next Seve Trophy and giving golf fans in the North East the chance to see Europe's best golfers compete over four days on The Wynyard course."

The Wynyard Club Managing Director Gary Munro said: “Having Seve here is proof positive that the Tees Valley and The Wynyard Club has what it takes to stage this fantastic event.

The response we have had from our membership and the public in general to the news that the Seve Trophy is being played here has been phenomenal.”

George O’Grady, The European Tour Executive Director Designate, said: “We are delighted that the fourth edition of The Seve Trophy is returning to England where the inaugural contest was held in 2000 and are particularly pleased that the North East will be hosting the competition.

“We congratulate The Wynyard Club on becoming the host venue and look forward to working with them and their partners as well as tournament organisers Amen Corner and MediaPro.”

The Wynyard Club is investing £750,000 to extend its clubhouse facilities to cater for the event and to carry out some improvements to the course to refine it to fully challenge Europe’s best.

One NorthEast led the region’s bid to stage the trophy. Alan Clarke, Chief Executive, said: “Securing the Seve Trophy for the North East is a major coup and yet more evidence of the region’s ability to stage world-class sporting events.

“Economists have forecast this event will create 100 new jobs in the Tees Valley and will generate £10m for the regional economy, as well as boosting the international profile of our region to millions of television viewers.”

Wynyard’s successful bid was put together by The Wynyard Partnership – comprising Tees Valley Regeneration, The Wynyard Club, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and Tees Valley Partnership.

Joe Docherty, Tees Valley Regeneration Chief Executive, said: “The Seve Trophy is a world-class event and will add hugely to the growing sense of confidence we are building in the Tees Valley.

“The tournament will massively raise the profile of the area, both nationally and internationally, and is a platform we fully intend to build upon.”

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council leader Councillor Bob Gibson said: “Hosting such a prestigious event sends out a very positive message about Stockton and the Tees Valley and it will give the local economy a further boost.

“The Seve Trophy will raise the area's profile and encourage others to come and enjoy the many good things we have to offer."

Alistair Arkley, Chairman of the Tees Valley Partnership, said: “Clinching this trophy is very important for our area and the rest of the North East, not simply in terms of the direct benefits but in the boost it gives both to our local sense of pride and confidence and in raising our image right across Europe.

“I’m sure that there will be huge spin-offs for our tourism sector which already employs many thousands of people and is growing in strength and importance all the time.”

Securing the Seve Trophy is a major element of the NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s £140m culture10 programme, supporting a range of international festivals and events to establish the North East as a world-class visitor destination.

Paul Collard, Creative Director for culture10 said: “The North East has a great sporting heritage as well as a reputation for being able to secure and host major world-class events.

“The Seve Trophy along with the NewcastleGateshead Cup and 25th Great North Run are just a few of the major sporting events taking place in 2005 helping to create a decade of world-class sport across the region.”

The Wynyard Club has signed a contract with tournament organisers - the two leading Spanish companies Amen Corner and MediaPro - to stage the event over Wynyard’s 7,043 yard Wellington parkland course, set against the backdrop of the stunning Wynyard Estate.

Bernhard Langer (Ryder Cup 2004 Captain) letter

Dear Seve,

As the Captain of the latest European Team to retain the Ryder Cup and beat the Americans on their own soil, I would like to thank you for creating the Seve Trophy and providing so many of our young players with invaluable experience of match play team golf.

Having been a member of your winning Continental Europe team in the inaugural event at Sunningdale four years ago, I know how competitive these events are and how much they help players prepare for the incredible pressure of playing in the Ryder Cup.

In 2002 we had rookies Phillip Price and Paul McGinley playing important roles in our win at The Belfry after they had gained experience of the format by appearing in the Seve Trophy matches in 2000 and 2002.

This year we had rookies like Paul Casey, David Howell and Ian Poulter coming into the Ryder Cup with the benefit of having played well in the Seve Trophy event in Valencia last year. It meant that they could cope much better with the special demands of foursomes and fourballs, as well as the dramatic singles round on the final day.

Many people have suggested that the point won on the 18th hole by Casey and Howell in their fourballs match against Jim Furyk and Chad Campbell was the turning point in this year’s contest. I’m sure it gave everyone on the team a real lift and think it’s fair to say that both players had the confidence of being involved in the Seve Trophy at El Saler to take with them into this match. As a result, they became the first rookie pairing in 25 years to win their first Ryder Cup match.

I expect the 2005 Seve Trophy in the North East of England will also feature a number of young players on both sides who will go on to represent Europe in future Ryder Cup matches. I wish you and event every success and will do my best to qualify for your team once again.

Best wishes

Bernhard Langer.

Colin Montgomerie speech

Hi, I am Colin Montgomerie, captain of the Great Britain & Ireland 2005 Seve Trophy team.

It’s been a marvellous tournament over the last three occasions.

Great Britain & Ireland have been lucky enough to win it twice in a row now and I think we are odds on to win it again with our fantastic team…Great Britain & Ireland supplied nine out of the twelve members of the recent winning Ryder Cup team, which was fantastic.

I’m honoured to be the captain again and look forward to it. The format is very Ryder Cup - finishing off with the singles, which is tremendous. I’ve had my battles with Seve in the past. I lost the first two matches and thank goodness I got one over him last time.

We look forward to the competition immensely - the whole European tour does. The qualification will start very soon and everybody is anxious to try and make my team. I have one pick and I usually go for the top player in the world rankings not otherwise qualified. Whoever that may be, they will be a big asset to the team. That’s what I will do again.

So all I can say is, I am looking forward to participating myself and also captaining the 2005 Seve Trophy Great Britain & Ireland team.

Thank you.
