The Seve Trophy is a golfing team competition made up of the best European golfers carrying the name of Seve, one of the world and European golfing legends.

In 1998, Seve Ballesteros himself had the initiative of creating a European team golf competition. The idea binded all the sporting and emotional factors that Seve considered important throughout his career. A competition of the highest level where the players would fight hard during a whole year in order to qualify; a competition where the players would defend the interests of their teams as well as their own, something that for professionals in a individual sport conveys very special feelings and a pure European sporting concept.

Seve Ballesterosīs inclusion in the European Ryder Cup team meant that the team facing the USA was no longer Great Britain & Ireland but that of the whole of Europe. This change of regulations in the Ryder Cup was a demonstration of Seveīs European feeling and of his determination for golf to grow in Continental Europe.

As promoter of the change in the Ryder Cup norms, as a 5 times member of the European Ryder Cup Team and as winning Captain of the 1997 edition which was the first to take place outside the British Isles, the Seve trophy officially launched on the 4th February by Severiano himself, confronts in alternate non Ryder Cup years the Great Britain &Ireland team against Continental Europe in the European Team Golf Competition.
